If you asked me the author of the book got a bit confused between Awakening and Ascension. Suddenly doing bigger things requires a higher sphere rating instead of more successes, there are increased quintessence requirements and they even including things like self harm (scour pattern) and sacrifice to obtain quintessence like you do with mana in the awakening game, etc.
Maybe I read it wrong, but that’s what I got from the book. I love the Awakening game system, and it works really wel, but they picked stuff from there to make Ascension magic more complicated and harder for the mages to perform without including the Awakening stuff that encourages players to actually use their magic. It’s become “You can change the very fabric of reality! Except in the following 1000 cases.”
