Crossover: Werecat in the Ascension Part 2

In Part 2 of our Bastet crossover discussion, we examine the Ajaba’s conflicting histories, Black Tooth’s shortcomings as a villain, supernatural Gifts and Rites, and how Bastet can function as player characters, antagonists, or allies in a Mage chronicle. We also consider hedge magic, stealing Gifts, the problems of mixing World of Darkness game systems, and why a Bastet who knows something your cabal doesn’t may be more interesting than another supernatural combatant.

Show Notes

  • Bastet – The original White Wolf sourcebook covering the werecat tribes, their society, Gifts, Rites, magical practices, and relationships with other supernatural creatures. Introduces the Ajaba as the lost tribe of the Bastet.
  • Players Guide to the Changing Breeds — Revises the Changing Breeds and their place in the World of Darkness, including the Ajaba’s recovery, Kisasi’s leadership, and the Ahadi alliance.
  • W20 Changing Breeds – The Werewolf 20th Anniversary sourcebook revisits the Ajaba, introduces their Dawn, Dusk, and Midnight aspects, and updates Gifts, Rites, and character creation.
  • Ajaba – The former lost tribe whose history changes significantly across editions.
  • Black Tooth– The powerful Simba warlord responsible for devastating the Ajaba.
  • Bastet Gifts – Supernatural abilities ranging from healing, stealth, and spirit sight to destructive attacks. Includes discussion of learning or “swiping” Gifts from other shapeshifters and balancing these powers in Mage chronicles.
  • Rites of the Bastet – Ceremonies involving spiritual relationships, warding, protection, and den realms. The episode examines how their mechanical power and narrative significance translate into Mage games.
  • Den-Realms – Supernaturally protected territories connected to the Umbra. Discussed as sources of territorial conflict and as possible foundations for long-term relationships between mages and Bastet.
  • Black Leopard, Red Wolf by Marlon James – The first novel in the Dark Star trilogy.
